Welcome to the Uncommon Sense Teaching Cohort! Let’s introduce ourselves!

Hello! I’m Valerie Pennington (online The Penguin Prof) and I’m a full-time biology professor and YouTuber. Since the pandemic, I’ve been serving as the Teaching With Technology Faculty Coordinator at my college, so I’m training faculty to create engaging, inclusive and accessible courses online (both synchronous and asynchronous). I’m a HUGE fan of Dr. Oakley and all of her books, so when I saw she was facilitating this course, I signed up! Looking forward to it.
Cheers!
Valerie

Hi all, I am Mark Grooms. I am an Associate Business Professor at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. I took the “Learning How to Learn” course many years ago. Even with years of learning, I found great value in what is taught in that course. In fact, students in my class get extra credit for taking the course. Continuously improving my courses is important to me. Learning is fun, and teaching is fun. So - looking forward to this new class.

Hey, cohort! My name’s Kat. I’m a communications strategist, ESOL teacher, and avid fan of Learning How to Learn and Mindshift. I’m really looking forward to connecting with you all while completing this course—and then applying this knowledge to improve my English instruction, as well as make the most of other learning opportunities for myself in the future.

Hello everyone! This is Shambhavi from India.
I am a lifelong learner. I love sharing/ exchanging learnings with friends. I am not a teacher by profession but I feel similar skills as teaching are useful in better explaining ourselves to those around us. So glad to join y’all!

Hi all,

I’m a longtime fan of CC and used to be involved in MOOC creation. These days I’m involved in creating tutorials for a mapping software company. I’m passionate about teaching and learning and curious about how CC “cohorts” work to help motivate and engage students.

I’m Madeleine. I’m working towards my single subject teaching credential in art. My favorite class thus far was “The Science of Teaching” which focused on the neuroscience of learning. I’m looking forward to expanding on this knowledge to improve my own learning and to better serve my students. I am ALWAYS learning something and I look forward to learning how to do it more efficiently.

Hi! I’m Ernitia, a lifelong learner from Indonesia.
I used to be an English teacher but am now a data scientist. Having taken Learning How To Learn and Mindshift, the skills I learned from those two courses helped me tremendously during my quest for a career change at not a so young age.
Currently still teaching in my free time, I wish to learn how to be a better teacher, both for my students and my children.
Excited to learn together with you all!

Hi there . I am Ershad Khandker. 58 years old, and from Bangladesh. I am a consultant specialising in recruitment. I am a Science freak, and i think that Science should become mainstream, so much so that, every issue would be put through the Scientific way of empirical and honest research and proof. Science actually keeps everything real and anything it does not understand it does not undermine , it simply says, it does not know the answer! Biotechnology. and genetics are my favourite, both are cut from the same cloth . A big fan of Barb. Looking forward to the course, though this is a stressful time, with sleep deprivation and some work pressure too, on top of that, my daughter has Schizophrenia. I wanted to mention that, simply because, such issues could become normal, and could make others feel that, such issues are everyday matter, and maybe someone would google Psychosis and learn a little bit more about mental disease . Happy to be here, and would try hard to complete the course. Thanks and Regards .

Hi everyone! I am Kristina, originally from Sweden but I have moved around a lot within Europe and currently live in Spain. I used to be a teacher but am now more interested in self-directed learning, both for myself and in helping other self-directed learners so I am interested to find out how the concepts in Uncommon Sense Teaching can be applied to this type of learning, where the curriculum is not fixed.

Like others on here, I did the Learning How to Learn course years ago and am applying many of those techniques to my own studies. I am very excited to do this course as part of a cohort, as I also did the first cohort (then called study group) on classcentral last year on Mountains 101 (which is also a mooc I highly recommend - it was my first taste of geology and I have since gone down a geology rabbit hole in my studies).

 I’m Kerem Kart, I’m currently living in Istanbul, Turkey. I originally trained as a lawyer at Istanbul University, LLB. I met Barb’s work with Learning How to Learn, which was a game-changer in my life. I’ve also read Barb’s books Mindshift and A Mind for Numbers that helped me deepen my knowledge in the science of learning!

I feel ecstatic about the Class Central Cohorts, which reduce barriers in learning and provide us with a friendly and supportive environment. I’ve already participated in two cohorts ALOHAF and TOEFL Speaking Practice. I’m so excited to take part in this cohort as well.

Apparently, learning and teaching are intertwined processes. I often find myself trying to teach a friend what I recently learned. I believe that Uncommon Sense of Teaching help me improve my teaching skills and deepen my knowledge further in the science of learning.
