Lesson 8: Magma vs. lava

I admit that this might seem like a useless question but I was wondering: is there a reason why we discern magma from lava? I mean why is there the need to use two different terms instead of “magma on the surface” for lava.
Etymologically, they come from different places, lava from Italian (and thus essentially from Latin) for “stream”, and magma comes from a Greek word for unguent. But there might be, I believe, some stronger (historical, or scientific) argument for that.
